The Storyteller's Disappointment —
- I have a vivid memory from my childhood; every day around 3pm, my mum would come home from work. As she reached into her bag to find her key, and turn it in the lock, her three simple bangles would clink together.
This was the most comforting sound; it was the sound of my mother coming home.
I think my love of layering charms and bangles must inherently be linked to this memory, stacking in order to create this comforting sound of safety.
Dante wrote the “Divine Comedy” to chart his journey through Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. Writing his story was a means of finding salvation, at a time in his life when he felt lost in a dark wood.
His tale is made up of moments of vulnerability, fear, a desire for love, direction and enlightenment. At points, he crumbles in the face of rocky terrain, at others he marvels at the stars and finds courage in friendship. Through poetry, he attempts to piece together his journey, in 100 poems, made up of fragmented memories.
Storytelling is the magical spell that tied the souvenirs together.
The Museum of Memories is a cluster of my experiences, linked together through chains, in a bric-a-brac anthology, beginning with my earliest memory - that of my mother and her three bangles, coming home from work.
